Speaking at Ovum’s Smart to Future City Forum, Ian Jones, Smart City Lead at the City of Leeds, highlighted the ambitions of the city is to create a citizen and data driven healthcare program for its aging population. Using a strategy based on digital innovation and open data, the team are in the process of bridging the £600 million gap in budgets to meet the demands of an aging population. The ambition of the city is to create a programme which enables digital thinking in a health system which could be seen as bulky, un-responsive and limited. “Open data gives us a view on how the city operates,” said Jones. “It allows customers to see data, understand the situation, raise questions and allows us to use the data to encourage innovators to help us solve the cities problems.

The Canadian Open Data Summit is being held in Saint John on Thursday in attempts to create opportunities for citizens and private sector businesses in the city. It’s the first time the annual event, designed to address the most pressing challenges facing the open data community, has been held in Atlantic Canada. “When we think about data, we think big data, analytics,” said Cathy Simpson, technology leader for nb+, a digital lab and open data initiative between the provincial government and TechImpact, and chairwoman of the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation. “It’s information available for anyone, anytime, anywhere,” she said. “It’s mapping data … where our parks are located, where our buildings are located.

The amount of digital data we are creating every day is mind-boggling. But the photos we take, tweets we send, places we check into and other digital detritus is often siloed into proprietary formats from various companies stored on disparate sites across the web. Camlistore, which stands for Content-Addressable Multi-Layer Indexed Storage, is an open-source project from Livejournal creator and current Googler Brad Fitzpatrick that aims to store your digital life in an easy-to-search, privately controlled environment. Fitzpatrick spoke about the project, which started as his 20 percent time project back in 2011, last night at Google’s Seattle office.

The White House celebrated the first anniversary of the Police Data Initiative last week by announcing a number of new police departments and public and private sector organizations that have joined the program to increase transparency in law enforcement data. When it was first created last April, 14 jurisdictions across the country committed to the initiative. Since then, participation has grown to 53 participating law enforcement agencies, which have released over 90 datasets of information to the public. In addition to law enforcement, the initiative is supported by a number of private sector and nonprofit organizations providing digital tools and assistance with opening and interpreting data.

Every discipline of science is unique.  Ecology is no exception.  We work in diverse, complex, context-dependent systems. Global change and anthropogenic influences are very real issues for the health of the planet that ecologists often examine.  As a discipline, we have moved from context-dependent, local studies to much larger, integrated studies.  Collaboration is critical and increasingly common within our field (Nabout et al. 2015), and addressing change at much larger scales has been a major innovation in the last ten years. With larger teams and increased scales of study, ecology has crossed the big data threshold (Hampton et al. 2013) and with that power, has come great responsibility and new challenges to our discipline.

The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) has released online an amazing 300 terabytes (TB) of raw data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for public usage. The latest upload has come after the one made in 2014, and the data can be openly accessed via the CERN Open Data Portal. The upload involves over 100 TB of data from proton collisions at 7 TeV, and has added to the earlier data collected at the LHC by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector back in 2011. Completed in 2008, the LHC is the biggest and most robust particle accelerator that went live for the first time in September 2010.

The French Digital Council (CNNum), is an independent advisory commission which was set up in April 2011.Its role is to issue independent opinions and recommendations on any question relating to the impact of digital technologies on economy and society. Hooray for science and freedom of information – CERN has released over 300TB of data from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) onto the internet for free to enable anyone study particle physics and use the data in their own research. The data is available on the CERN Open Data Portal, which was developed by CERN’s IT Department and Scientific Information Service in collaboration with the researchers running the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) general-purpose particle physics detector at the LHC. “Members of the CMS Collaboration put in lots of effort and thousands of person-hours each of service work in order to operate the CMS detector and collect these research data for our analysis,” said Kati Lassila-Perini, a CMS physicist who leads these data-preservation efforts.
