In recent years, a suite of new tools has emerged to help us ease some of our most pressing societal problems, such as impact investing, shared value, social enterprise and social innovation. Gradually, all sectors have come to recognise the value of these models, albeit with some disagreement over the scale of value. One tool has only just begun to be considered for its potential contribution to positive social impact – “big data”. The easiest way to think about big data is for what it enables us to do with large volumes of information.

Hyderabad: Much like the Centre, the Telangana government too plans to put out data pertaining to various departments in the public domain. On the lines of data.gov.in — the website on which the central government shares information — a single portal has been envisaged for state-related data. The purpose of such a move is to make available to the public a huge cache of information that can be analysed or made use of. “Once such data is put up to be accessed by the public, there are endless possibilities on how it can be used for the benefit of society in general,” said Rakesh Reddy Dubbudu, founder of ‘Factly’ and co-convenor of National Campaign for People’s Right to Information (NCPRI).

BENGALURU: Co-founder of DataMeet (Community of Data Science and Open Data enthusiasts) Thejesh GN conducted a workshop with a bunch of children and taught them to build sensors for the environment on Sunday afternoon in Bengaluru.”Weather change is just a feeling for most children but they will now be able to measure the temperature and humidity at any given time at their homes,” said Thejesh.The four-hour workshop was a part of the Open Data Camp Meet 2016 and was attended by students. “I have never done anything like this before and it was so interesting that I will definitely go home and re-build the sensor just the way it was taught,” said Vaishnavi Arun, a second year student of MCC.The children built sensors using LED, micro-controller and bread board.

Patients seeking urgent medical care in Perth can now view emergency waiting times for local hospitals, thanks to a new app developed in Australia. The app, WA Emergency Waiting Times, uses existing Perth hospital emergency wait time data, and taps into mobile device geolocation, local maps, and traffic data to give people needing to go to the hospital in a non life-threatening emergency an aggregated travel and wait time. The team behind the app, Sydney-based Readify, said the idea came in response to the concept of using open and cross-departmental data to benefit its citizens.

The new app has been designed to help Perth residents quickly and easily choose which hospital to go to in an emergency. This year, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) was selected as a host location for the NASA Space Apps Challenge, an annual event where NASA gives a series of prompts and challenges for programmers around the world to complete. Using multiple sets of existing open data, attendees are provided the resources to develop creative and imaginative solutions to complex issues. Over fifty students, teachers, and space lovers gathered at the RIT Center for Media, Arts, Games, Interaction, and Creativity (MAGIC) to work on projects April 23-24. The challenges were diverse, with topics ranging from the International Space Station to the solar system and even journeying to Mars. The full list of challenges is on the Space Apps website.

In January, then-Opposition leader Brian Pallister released a document titled the Open Government Initiative, containing 18 proposed initiatives the Progressive Conservatives claimed would make Manitoba a leader in the country in terms of the high ethical standards demanded of both elected politicians and appointed civil servants. At the time, the document occasioned little commentary, perhaps reflecting pessimism within the media and among the public that the promised reforms would ever be implemented. History suggests parties strongly favour reforms in opposition but lose their enthusiasm once they control the levers of power. It’s time to examine what the PCs promised and what reforms might have been omitted.
