Africa undressed: the continent pictured with no clouds in the sky. This is not a natural state, of course; there is always a weather system bubbling up somewhere. But if you have access to a lot of images acquired over the course of several months, it becomes possible to construct a mosaic. This one was produced from observations made by the EU’s new Sentinel-2a satellite, which is now routinely mapping Planet Earth. It is a powerful capability. Sensitive across 13 spectral bands (colours) and able to see details as small as 10m across – the spacecraft’s camera “carpet maps” the land surface beneath it. Every strip is 290km wide. And if you think about how fast the satellite is moving in orbit – that is a large swathe of real estate to scoop up at once.

Forty-six million Americans use mobile fitness and health apps. Over half of providers serving Medicare or Medicaid patients are using electronic health records (EHRs). Despite such advances and proliferation of health data and its collection, we are not yet on an inevitable path to unleashing the often-promised “power of data” because data remain proprietary and fragmented among insurers, providers, health record companies, government agencies, and researchers. Despite the technological integration seen in banking and other industries, health care data has remained scattered and inaccessible. EHRs remain fragmented among 861 distinct ambulatory vendors and 277 inpatient vendors as of 2013.

The University of Botswana is hosting the First International Conference on the Internet, Cyber Security and Information Systems in Gaborone to the 20th May 2016 at The Gaborone International Convention Center (GICC). The conference is held in collaboration with the University of Johannesburg (UJ), South Africa. According to a statement in the hands of Biztechafrica, the main aim of the conference is to share challenges, experiences and solutions to the continuing problems posed by Internet Based information Systems During an earlier press conference on May 11 for this forum, UB’s Dr Tshiamo Motshegwa from the Department of Computer Sciences said the conference will deliberate on cyber security issues which has of late become critical for the safety of internet users.

The federal government’s push to move health data to electronic platforms is based in part on the premise that consumers should have control over their own information. But deep in the policy weeds, there’s some dispute among practitioners, vendors and developers about how much control patients should exercise over their health information. The Health IT Policy and Standards committees, which act as advisers to leaders at the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC), narrowly approved a set of recommendations that provide a path to regulate and, to a certain extent, standardize how qualified health records and user-facing apps share data via application programming interfaces, which are pieces of software that conduct transactions between data sources and applications.

City procurement data, historical aerial photos and postal code areas are among the most downloaded open data on the Helsinki Region Infoshare service. The usage statistics of Helsinki Region Infoshare (HRI) reveal that the service’s most downloaded dataset of all time are the procurement data files released by the City of Helsinki. The pioneering open data service marks its fifth anniversary in May. The Helsinki procurement data contains tens of thousands of transactions made by city departments, from stationary purchases worth less than one euro all the way to the city’s half-billion-euro contribution to the health care operations of the Helsinki and Uusimaa Hospital District.

As a particle physicist working with the CMS collaboration taking data in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), now is an incredibly exciting time. In my last post I talked about hints of new physics in the data which were collected in 2015. The LHC was shut down for scheduled maintenance from Dec 2015 until March. During the last week in April, our CMS collaboration was able to turn our large solenoidal magnet to full field and start taking calibration data. Then, you might have heard about the weasel incident. Here, a rodent chewed through a 66 kilovolt power cable and shut the power down. You can read many reports including the one here . Luckily, the power down procedures worked both for the LHC and also our CMS detector and the damage was able to be repaired within a week.

What: “2016 Socrata Open Data Benchmark Study,” a survey designed to better understand the current attitudes and opinions on the open data environment among publishers and users of open data in government. Why:  As city, state and federal agencies have release datasets on city budgets, police use-of-force incidents, public transit and even aeronautical data, better understanding of different approaches, benefits and impacts of opening data can foster more efficient development. Findings: The majority (83 percent) of all respondents said their agency’s goal is to make the most important and useful data open. Federal agencies went further, with 56 percent of respondents saying they’re working to make as much of their data as open as possible.
