It was June 2016, and we were into the last phase of planning for the changes we needed to make for our upcoming 45 day sale period which started in July, and where we were expecting a steep surge in traffic. Since our first product launch last October, we were using AWS’ services in North Virginia, due to cheaper costs and wider availability of the services that were being offered. Over a period of time, we saw the high latency for the connections coming from the majority of our traffic in India. Initially, we thought of moving our infrastructure to Singapore, and including the use of Akamai’s hop reduction solution from a client ISP to the data centre in the cloud. But 24-hours prior to the actual migration, we got a confirmation of the launch of AWS Mumbai data centres.

Scrapping the privatisation of the Land Registry will be a victory for common sense if confirmed following consultation, says Search Acumen’s managing director Andrew Lloyd. While the government hasn’t confirmed the move plans to privatise the Land Registry – announced in the Queen’s Speech in May – were expected to be included in the Neighbourhood Planning and Infrastructure Bill put to parliament on Wednesday evening. However details of the plans were omitted, indicating the proposal has been dropped. A blackspot symbolises the problem in the waste collection system. A city can solve the garbage problem, with the help of authentic data on blackspots marked on map. We launched the Blackspot Mapping Project in the last week of August. Two weeks into the project, we are already nearing 200 spots. As we reached out to people for help, we also faced many questions: Why are you doing this? What’s the intent? What will this data be used for? So many apps to map garbage and other issues – why should we contribute data to this project? In this article, we sort of try to explain it all in detail. Our cities suffer from multiple problems. Especially a mega-city of 1 crore people like Bengaluru has so many issues waiting to be solved, and new ones cropping up.

If a blossoming collaboration between two city leaders is any indication, innovation knows no borders in the Kansas City metro. Bob Bennett, chief innovation officer for Kansas City, Mo., and Alan Howze, chief knowledge office for the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan., both share a common goal: they believe that open data is paramount to the success of the metro area. Bennett, who has served as CIO for almost a year now, was thrilled when the UG announced Howze as the new CKO. Although this is not the first time Kansas City, Kan. has led innovation efforts, it was the first centralized office position. Bennett said this would lead to more collaboration across borders, which he believes is best for the metro.

Microsoft Corporation MSFT is set to offer Office 365 and Azure services from its data centers in the UK. The new offering will cover a range of sectors such as banking, legal, utility and public. It will help reduce dependence of Microsoft’s customers on European data centers. The company is also planning to add its Dynamics CRM Online suite of cloud sales and marketing applications in the first half of 2017. Notably, the early takers include public sector bodies such as the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, Capita and Careflow Connect. The world’s second largest cloud service provider is embroiled in a legal battle with the U.S.

Out-of-home player, JCDecaux, has signed up with Data Republic, becoming the first media owner to join the data exchange provider’s Open Data Marketplace. Established in 2014, Data Republic’s technology offers a marketplace for organisations wanting to enrich their own customer insights by sharing data. The company’s data pool has been bolstered by proprietary information sourced from some of Australia’s largest companies including Westpac and Qantas Loyalty, along with open government data sets. The new partnership allows JCDecaux to access geospatial, behavioural and transaction-level insights as well as list, trade and collaborate on data exchange projects, opening up new avenues to augment its offering.

The first media owner to join Data Republic’s Open Data Marketplace, JCDecaux is now among some of Australia’s largest service providers, benefiting from the ability to list, trade, and collaborate on data exchange projects. This partnership gives JCDecaux access to geospatial, behavioural and transaction level insights from an impressive library of proprietary data from leading organisations – Westpac, and Qantas Loyalty are foundation contributors – as well as a suite of open government data sets.
